The significance of Tuxford and Sons is far greater than their small size would suggest. They were a family engineering firm in Boston, Lincolnshire, which was in business for about fifty years ,from the late 1830s to the early 1880s, and at its peak employed over 200 men. They played an important part in the history of agricultural engineering, not only inventing the portable steam engines and the steam thrashing sets that served agriculture for a century before combine harvesters took over, but also helping to develop traction engines. They sold products all over the world and some examples of their work still; survive in several; countries, but the best known reminder of the firm are the eight sails of the preserved windmill at Heckington in Lincolnshire, the originals of which came from the mill that was part of Tuxford's site

In recent years the Heckington Mill site has been extensively developed and to mark the completion of that project this book is being published to celebrate the firm of Tuxford and Sons.

Since 2014 research for this book has been undertaken by Lesley Pinchbeck, Alan Rundle, Lynda Sergeant, Annette Southcott, Felicite Winch (nee Tuxford) and Neil Wright. Alexander Hayward has kindly written a Foreword to assess Tuxford and Sons significance in relation to technological developments in the period.
